Feint-Hearted

Feint-Hearted is a body of work that explores how materials carry emotional weight—what they hold, what they remember, and what they ask us to release. The work was shaped by a period of longing, emotional distance, and a quiet need for closeness. Each piece began with a question about what we choose to preserve, and why.

The primary material in this series is white rabbit fur I acquired in 2015 from an Indigenous trader in Tennessee who sourced it ethically from animals that died of natural causes. At the time, I tried using the fur to make a pillow, then a stitched blanket—both versions felt unresolved and hollow. Years later, I returned to the material not to force it into a story, but to understand how it made me feel. I paired it with pearls, silver, precious stones, and steel pins. Each form is held together by pressure and tension. The pins are embedded without glue; they stay in place through the structure of the object itself, which means they always need to be cared for. Some works can be worn. Others cannot. All are meant to be touched, but carefully. A pin might shift. A point might break the surface.

The work sits in the space between comfort and harm. These pieces carry both care and discomfort. I’ve always been drawn to this contrast—softness and sharpness, intimacy and caution, attraction and avoidance. Feint-Hearted holds the tension between those states without trying to resolve them.

That tension also lives in the emotional weight of objects we keep but do not use. What happens when something sits for years, untouched but not forgotten? Feint-Hearted is my response to that question.
